The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
