Fresh analysis suggests that people who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People buying such medications must be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a return to original weight in about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the drugs explains the amplified regain.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden return of appetite.
"It felt as if something activating and you're instantly starving," said one woman.
The struggle is worsened if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among women than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
